Ashes do not contain a viable donor cell that can be used in this way.

No, you cannot currently clone a dog from hair follicles through ViaGen’s standard cloning process, nor any cloning process available on the market today. A hair root may contain traces of nuclear DNA, but dog cloning requires viable cells that can be isolated, cultured, and preserved as a stable cell line.

Hair follicles are also difficult to collect and store reliably. Shed hair, clipped hair, and fur saved as a keepsake should not be treated as substitutes for the skin and ear tissue recommended for genetic preservation.

So, can you clone a dog from fur? Maybe one day in the future. But not in the present.

 

Can You Clone a Dog From a Tooth or Bone?

No. A removed tooth or piece of bone is not one of ViaGen’s recommended samples for cloning a dog. Teeth and bones may retain genetic information under some conditions, but cloning requires suitable cells that can be cultured and used as nuclear donors.

Do not attempt to collect the tissue yourself unless ViaGen gives you direct instructions during an emergency.

The tissue should reach us as quickly as possible. We accept refrigerated postmortem samples within five days under optimal conditions, but this is an absolute maximum timeframe rather than a reason to wait.

Every additional day reduces the chance of recovering enough viable cells. So you must arrange for tissue collection and shipping at the earliest available opportunity.

How Does Tissue Collection, Genetic Preservation, and Cell Storage Work?

Once we receive a viable sample, we immediately freeze it an an extremely low temperature in our lab. Then we store them away and keep them safe, so if you ever want to clone your dog, that option is now available to you even far off in the future.

How Is a Living Cell Line Established?

We isolate viable cells from the tissue and grows them through a cell culture. This creates a living cell line rather than simply storing a DNA record.

How Are the Cells Stored?

Your successfully cultured cells are then cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. But to be on the safe side, we store duplicate cell lines in separate monitored locations with restricted access.

 

Who Controls the Preserved Cells?

You retain ownership and control of your dog’s genetic material. We will not use, transfer, or dispose of the cells without your authorization.

 

Does Preservation Automatically Start Cloning?

No. Genetic preservation and dog cloning are separate services. Preserving the cells keeps the option available while giving you time to decide whether cloning is right for you.

 

What Can Go Wrong With Post-Death Tissue Preservation and Cell Storage?

Please keep in mind that, even if you shipped a sample to us within five days, it won’t be possible to establish a viable clone if any of the following has occured:

 

  • The dog has been cremated.
  • The body was not refrigerated promptly after death.
  • The tissue has significantly deteriorated or become contaminated.

 

The five-day period is a maximum under favorable conditions, not a guaranteed window.

Successful tissue collection also does not guarantee that cloning can proceed. ViaGen must first grow viable cells from the biopsy and cryopreserve the resulting cell line. Once those cells have been preserved, the owner can decide whether to begin cloning at a later date.

Other problems (though less common) may include:

 

  • Some tissue samples do not produce a sufficient quantity or quality of viable cells. A sample may still contain your dog’s DNA while failing to provide living cells that can be multiplied and cryopreserved for cloning. In such circumstances, we will allow a second sample to be submitted for culture at no additional cost. However, a second collection may no longer be possible if your dog has been cremated or buried. In which case, you’ll get a full refund.
  • The veterinary biopsy is not viable. Many veterinary pathology samples are chemically fixed or stored for diagnostic examination rather than future cell culture. That’s why it’s important for your veterinarian to follow our emergency protocols.
